Royal Glass House provides in-house powder coating and anodizing for aluminium work. The finishes are made in different ways, so compare their appearance and suitability for the product's location before deciding.
What powder coating is
Powder coating covers the aluminium with a fine coloured powder that is then baked on. The result is a hard, even skin of colour on top of the metal.
- A very wide range of colours, including matt, satin and gloss.
- Good for matching a brand colour or an interior scheme.
- If it is deeply scratched, the coating can chip, but small marks can usually be touched up.
What anodizing is
Anodizing does not add a layer on top. It thickens the natural protective layer that forms on aluminium, so the finish becomes part of the metal itself.
- Keeps the metallic look and feel of aluminium.
- Will not peel or flake, because there is no coating to come away.
- A smaller range of tones than powder coating.
Side by side
| Powder coating | Anodizing | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Solid colour | Metallic |
| Colour choice | Very wide | Limited tones |
| How it protects | A baked-on coating | Part of the metal surface |
| If scratched | Can chip; touch-up possible | Will not peel |
| Typical uses | Windows, doors, railings, louvres | Frames, trims, façade details |
Which to choose
- You want a specific colour, such as black, white or a brand colour: powder coating.
- You want the look of metal: anodizing.
- You are matching existing work: choose the same finish as what is already there.
Looking after either finish
Wash with water and a mild detergent from time to time, especially near the coast, and avoid abrasive cleaners. Dust and salt left on the surface for a long time are what wear finishes down.
Choose a finish by comparing real samples against the project's intended appearance and exposure.

Common questions
Is anodizing the same as powder coating?
No. Powder coating applies a coating to the surface; anodizing changes the aluminium's oxide layer. They have different appearances and selection considerations.
Which finish has more colour choices?
Colour availability depends on the finish provider and product range. Confirm the actual swatches and options available for your project.
Can I match an existing aluminium finish?
A close match may be possible, but colour and sheen can vary by product and batch. Share a sample or reference and confirm a physical sample before proceeding.
