Office partition with a frosted patterned privacy band

Frosted glass for privacy: sandblasting, film or patterned glass?

Frosted glass keeps a room private while the light still comes through. There are three main ways to get it, each with its own strengths.

Royal Glass House makes sandblasted glass for privacy in spaces such as bathrooms, meeting rooms and office partitions. Frosted finishes diffuse the view while allowing light through. This guide compares sandblasting, film and patterned glass, with links to our glass partitions and office partition guide.

Sandblasted glass

Sandblasting roughens the surface of the glass itself, giving a soft white finish. It can cover a whole panel, a band at eye level, or a pattern, text or logo.

  • Lasting: it is part of the glass, so it will not peel.
  • Can be done before glass is toughened, for showers and doors.
  • Needs a little more care when cleaning, because the surface is textured.

Privacy film

A frosted or patterned film is applied to the surface of clear glass.

  • Quick to apply to glass that is already installed.
  • Can be removed or changed later, which suits rented offices.
  • Can be scratched or lift at the edges over time.

Patterned and textured glass

Patterned glass has a texture rolled into it when it is made. It blurs the view and adds a decorative look.

  • A design feature in its own right.
  • Good for doors, cabinets and screens.
  • The pattern is fixed, so choose it carefully.

Which one where

  • Shower glass: sandblasting, because it lasts in wet areas.
  • Office meeting rooms: frosted bands, sandblasted or in film.
  • Rented spaces: film, because it can be removed.
  • Feature doors and cabinets: patterned glass.
Frosted glass diffuses the view while allowing light through.

What to do next

Choose a privacy treatment based on whether the glass is new or already installed, how much screening is needed and the desired finish. See glass sandblasting or contact us with a photo of the space.

Common questions

Does frosted glass let light through?

Translucent finishes diffuse light while obscuring a clear view. The amount of light and privacy depends on the product and pattern.

Can film be added to existing glass?

Some films are designed for application to existing glass. Confirm compatibility, surface condition and installation requirements with the film supplier.

Is sandblasted glass easy to clean?

The treated surface can need different care from smooth glass. Ask the fabricator for cleaning instructions for the chosen finish.
